Note of intent

Bolsonaro’s victory was paralysing for me personally, and I felt the need to face up to this country’s new configuration. It was the debate on public security and moral values that guided the last elections. I wanted to do this film to try to understand the Brazil of today, and as an exercise in self-questioning. I am also interested in researching documentary form, and to study the forms of portrait in a documentary.

Synopsis

What is it like to be progressive and work in institutions based on extreme right wing ideologies? The Policeman and the Pastor is a creative documentary that builds an intimate portrait by a sensitive immersion into two complex individuals, an antifascist police officer and a feminist pastor. The narrative develops following two characters who consider themselves in “limbo”: they are viewed with suspicion by progressive movements, and seen as traitors in the institutions where they work. This film investigates this “no place”, understanding it as a privileged space. Alexandre and Valeria walk through groups that do not communicate and are key characters to understand and delve into contemporary social issues the world is facing.

Visual concept

The Policeman and the Pastor is a creative documentary feature, which builds a deep and complex portrait of two characters. In addition to public performance, the film delves into the intimacy of these individuals and proposes to create a relationship between the documentarist and the characters, in a process where not only those who shoot are aware of what is being filmed, but also where a filming concept is created as an investigation into the mise en scène itself.
