Six films have be selected to participate in Films in Progress 20, to take place on September 20 and 21 within the framework of San Sebastian Festival’s 59th edition.
This year, for first time at Films in Progress, we will present the following titles: Era uma vez Verônica (Brazil), by Marcelo Gomes, who already participated in the Horizontes Latinos section at San Sebastian Festival with his Cinema, Aspirinas e Urubus (2005); Infancia Clandestina (Argentina), by Benjamín Ávila, who previously presented the documentary Nietos (Identidad y memoria) in Zabaltegi Specials in 2004; Joven & Alocada (Chile), by Marialy Rivas; Un Mundo Secreto (México), by Gabriel Mariño; La Playa (Colombia), by Juan Andrés Arango and 7 Cajas (Paraguay), by Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori.
Films in Progress is the programme of aid to Latin America cinema called twice yearly, once at the San Sebastian Festival and again at the Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine in Toulouse.
A total of 71 films were received from 15 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, France, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The Films in Progress Industry Award
The companies Vertigo films, Best Digital, Dolby, Kodak (División de Cine Profesional), Molinare Madrid, Nephilim Producciones, No Problem Sonido and Technicolor Entertainment Services Spain will assume the post-production of a film until achieving an English-subtitled 35 mm copy.

Casa de América Award for Aid to the Post-Production of Latin American Films, carrying €10,000 gross.

ERA UMA VEZ VERÔNICA

The reflections of Veronica, a young girl recently graduated in Medicine who swims in a sea of doubt and uncertainty. Not only does she question her professional career and sentimental relations, but also her ability to deal with life and the future lying ahead of her.
Marcelo Gomes
His contact with cinema started with a cine-club he created in his hometown, Recife. Later, he graduated in Film Studies at Bristol University and directed a number of awarded short-films. His first feature, Cinema, Aspirin and Vultures, premiered at Un Certain Regard, Cannes, in 2005 and received France’s Award of the Ministry of Education. It’s been awarded with more than 50 prizes worldwide.
His second feature film, I travel because I have to, I come back because I love you, co-directed by Karim Aïnouz premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2009 and recently received the awards for best direction and best cinematography at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival.

Juan lives in clandestinity. Just like his mum, his dad and his adored Uncle Beto, outside his home he has another name. At school, Juan is known as Ernesto. And he meets Maria, who only has one name. A work based on true events in the filmmaker’s life, evoking love under the military dictatorship in Argentina.

Guionista y Director de cortos premiados internacionalmente y del largometraje documental Nietos, sobre hijos de desaparecidos cuya identidad restituyeron las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo (Presentación especial Zabaltegui 2004). Productor de programas para la televisión educativa.
Infancia Clandestina es su primer largometraje de ficción. Está basado en hechos reales de su historia personal.
JOVEN & ALOCADA

Daniela is a 17 year-old born and bred in a strict Evangelical family. A rebel by nature, she tries to follow the “right path” after having been unmasked as a fornicator by her incredulous parents. But on the road to salvation she discovers a devastating obstacle to achieving her much-desired spiritual harmony; a sex-drive irreconcilable with the canons of her religion.
Marialy Rivas
Film director, her work includes commercials, short films, video clips and television series. She currently works at Fabula, where she is developing her first feature-length film “Joven & Alocada”, now in Post Production, film winner of the Chilean 2009 Audiovisual Fund Grant. Her first short film, Desde Siempre won the FICS exhibited by Canal + España. In 2005, she was chosen as “Best Advertising Film Director in Chile” by “El Ojo de Ibero America”. Her work has been reviewed in a wide variety of media, such as Cahiers du Cinema, Cinemanía España and MTV, among others. Her short film Blokes, was premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, in the Official Competition. Then the short participated in several festivals, as NYFF 2010, Sundance 2011, Berlinale 2011, Miami International Film Festival 2011, and San Francisco International Film Festival 2011.

Maria’s last day of class marks the start of a journey: she’ll cross Mexico but doesn’t really know why. Gabriel Mariño
Born in Puebla, Mexico, he studied History at UNAM and Cinema at the Center of Capacitation C.C.C., Selected for an exchange program between C.C.C. and the Hochshule fur Fernsehen und Film from Munich, Germany, he took a documentary workshop imparted by James Benning and a documentary workshop given by Patricio Guzmán, has been a scholarship holder for FICCO, TyPA fundation and IBERMEDIA.

Juan Andrés Arango
Juan Andrés Arango studied film at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and specialized in photography at the ESCAC in Barcelona. He directed the documentaries Los Vega and Dos fandangos, and Les papiersbruns, winner of the Arts Council Award in Quebec. His short films Eloisa y Las Nieves and Comment apprendre à dire bonjour en 10 étapes, won the Audience Award at the Laussane Shortfilm Festival.

It’s Friday in Asunción and the temperature is 40ºC. Victor, a 17 year-old wheelbarrow boy, dreams of becoming famous and can’t take his eyes off a TV set in Paraguay’s Mercado 4. He’s offered the chance to deliver seven boxes without knowing what they contain in exchange for $100. But what sounded like an easy job soon gets complicated. Inside the boxes is something that everyone wants.

Juan Carlos Maneglia and Tana Schémbori are licensed in Communication Sciences and their passion is film. Both seek their own language and a Paraguayan film to identify them. Together they made short films that got international awards and TV series that contributed to the consolidation of fiction in Paraguayan television. 7 CAJAS is their first feature film.
