Synopsis:
The year is 1973. The qualifying matches for 1974 World Cup in Germany are being played. In Chile, political instability looms over the government of Salvador Allende. The national team meets in the national stadium. They must take off to Moscow to play against the USSR in a key match if they want to make it to the 1974 World Cup in Germany. The date is September 11th, 1973, the very same day of Pinochet’s coup d’état. Thus begins their journey that confuses football and politics, one that will end back in Chile one month after, when the same players will play a ghost match with no opposing team.
Visual concept:
A story that portrays the adventures of a group of players who must choose between their love for sport and their political convictions. This creates a portrait from the inside out. The context is felt, but not seen, it is built from its effect that disturbs the human, professional and personal relationships of the characters. It’s an ensemble story told through several voices using the codes of the soccer jargon of the time, which hides a mystery, a lie, an exchange and a facade for what the military dictatorship is in Chile. From the narrative point of view the pain of the protagonists and their families will be contrasted with the joy of representing a national team. Politics, society and football are the components for a drama with an edge of black humor.
